MY INTERVIEW WITH

GLEN LARSON

This is a transcription of an interview I conducted on February 9, 2000, with Glen A. Larson, the man who created Battlestar Galactica and Galactica 1980. I'd like to thank Universal publicist Alan Sharpe for all his help in making this interview happen. In this talk, I discuss with Glen Larson the follow-up to the original series, Galactica 1980.

Mr. Larson, in Battlestar Galactica you gave us a fascinating Wagon Train To The Stars premise, compelling characters, interesting aliens and amazing space battles. In Galactica 1980 you gave us retread stock footage, time travel cliches, sitcom stories, precocious space children, car chases, and fish-out-of-water humor. Don't you think you owe fans an apology?

Larson:

Many fans have declared Galactica 1980 the worst science fiction series of all time. How does this make you feel considering you wrote almost every episode?

Larson:

How did it feel when the Sci-Fi channel in 1996 re-aired Galactica 1980 after most people had finally forgotten it? You must have been pretty pissed.

Larson:

Lorne Greene and Herbert Jefferson, Jr. were the only two actors from the original series who were regulars on Galactica 1980, and they were the only two people on G80 that fans cared to see. Was there ever a plan to have them actually do anything?

Larson:

Was it a conscious decision on your part to have Commander Adama on the verge of senility?

Larson:

Did you really think fans would buy the Cylons as having "evolved" when they were clearly more pathetic than they'd been in the original series?

Larson:

Did you really think fans would buy time travel in a science fiction show?

Larson:

Did you really think fans would buy car chases in a science fiction show?

Larson:

Did you really think fans would buy anything in this show?

Larson:

Were Troy and Dillon supposed to be as dumb as they looked?

Larson:

Mr. Larson, thank you for your time.

For the record, I bear no ill will towards Glen Larson and am actually very thankful for his creation of the original Battlestar Galactica. I'm just having a little fun here.
